A Borrowed Shirt and A Pie

Lately, I have been very inspired by one blog, calivintage, and find myself browsing through her long list of outfits most of the time that I am on the internet. I love that she looks different everyday, and tries different looks, but still looks the same, as in, she looks like herself in every different outfit.

The other day, desperate for warm clothes, (gosh, I am REALLY struggling) I decided to trawl through some of her posts until I found the one in the above link, and thought it was perfect!

I never usually wear Matt's shirts because they just look boxy and awful on my body type, but stick a cardigan on top and it looks great - so great that I think I might invest in my own flannelette one (for extra warmth). So, thanks Calivintage! Here's my interpretation:

So, complete outfit was Matt's shirt, Cotton On cardigan, Mum's suit jacket from the '80's, Jay Jay's high-waisted jeans, Reject Shop socks and Sportsgirl shoes.

I think I have about two layers on underneath the shirt as well as tights on underneath my jeans for extra warmth. I'd really love tips of Australian shops I can get warmer clothing from. I'm off to Metallicus today with my housemate, who works for them, and Tracy (boyfriend's sister) to try to get some warmer basics, but I really need warmer jumpers, cardigans and clothes in general!

Thanks, Matt. Lol

In other news, I baked a wonderful beef and vegetable pie the other night, mostly from scratch - c'mon, who doesn't use the sheets of frozen puff pastry! We didn't have enough potatoes to make a shepherd's pie, so I put pastry on top instead. Delicious! Here's a photo (which refuses to centre itself properly - argh!);

See the pretty leaves on top?

And last night I cooked my step-dad, Fred's German Green Bean Soup, which uses a special German herb called 'Bohnenkraut' or 'Summer Bean Herb' (Wiki calls it Summer Savory at one point, and Summer Bean Herb at another, but I think Summer Bean Herb is a better translation). The soup is a lovely broth, and great to make when we're poor.

Day One of the no sugar (diet? detox? I'm not sure) thing but it is only 11am, so all I've had is two Vita Brits (they don't have sugar added) and some milk. So far, so good.

Hey there sugar!

Actually, Goodbye sugar!

A while ago, inspired by my friend Paula, who I worked with at the time, I decided to go two weeks without chocolate, and did so successfully, which I was pleasantly surprised about. After doing so, I wanted chocolate less often, and felt very refreshed! So recently, after a long time of frustration over my acne and some inspiration from another friend, Terri, who has undertaken a crazy detox that I don't think I could ever do myself, I have decided to take my last attempt one step further and go without refined sugar for two weeks.

This means I can still eat fruit (fructose) and milk (lactose) but nothing that has sugar (glucose), so no alcohol, no scones from work (Aargh!), no over processed flour products (white pasta, white bread - not that I really eat that anyway), and nothing with added sugar at all.

I'm hoping that by doing this I will improve my skin and that after I finish I will want to eat products with refined sugar in them less often, it might also have a bit of a detoxifying effect that could be useful because I'm very stressed out and highly strung at the moment!!!

Luckily for me, I live very close to the Queen Victoria Markets so I can get plenty of fresh fruit and lots of dried pulses to cut down the amount of processed food I eat. If you have any ideas for snacks during this period, I'd love to hear them - just don't say carrot sticks! PLEASE!

Also, I plan on cooking Polenta for the first time and I'm very excited! I'm going to try this recipe, but use chicken thighs instead of beef mince (Free Range Chicken, of course!). Delish!

Wish me luck!

Dress ups box

I thought I might post some of my more memorable costumes over the years for your enjoyment/possible inspiration.

1940's Pin-up with Anthony, for Boun's 30th, 2009

The evolution of the 1940's Pin-up costume into the Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini costume that I made (without a pattern) for the La Trobe University Wodonga's Sexual Deviants Ball 2009.

This was my Wood Nymph costume for a fairy picnic my then, not-yet-housemate, Lisa had in the Botanic Gardens in Albury, 2009. Hair and make-up by my sister, Alysia, and I made the head piece from a dead vine I found.

We had an 'F' party for my lovely British friend, Flora, when she went back to England. I was a flamingo. My sister, again did my make-up. Another costume of 2009.

This was originally a badly made bridesmaids dress for my dad's very tacky 3rd wedding. I brought in the skirt to make it a pencil skirt, shortened it and added the black belt and wore it to a Mad Men party. 2009. My sister (the genius!) made my very short hair into this fantastic beehive and did my makeup.

I think this was the first costume I ever made; Wonder Woman for the Heroes and Villains night at Sodens in Albury. The DJ duo, Culture Vulture, who were regulars back then, deemed my costume the best, and I won the $50 bar tab!

This one was a sports themed party, Joe's 21st, 2009.

At my 13th Birthday, I was a witch. 2000.

At my friend Anthony's 21st, a 'Things That Go Bump in the Night' theme. This costume was my sister's idea, and she did the hair and make-up. I thought I made a great spider!

Most recently, this is what I wore to the lovely Dayna's 30th birthday, which was a Vintage theme. So proud of my hair because I did all myself - I don't usually.

So, what do you think?

Groovin the Moo 2010

On Saturday, May 1 I had the pleasure of attending my third Groovin the Moo festival. This one was held in Bendigo and somehow, I managed to get the day off work for it (thank God!)

The acts that played included Lisa Mitchell, Space Invadas, Grinspoon, Miami Horror, British India, Bag Raiders, Yacht Club DJs, Jonathan Boulet, Empire of the Sun, Tegan and Sara, Vampire Weekend, Spoon and a few others. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful sunny day and a great group of friends to enjoy the festival with. I'm not sure what my favourite band was because I just loved so many of them!

Lisa, me, Holly and Johanne

Ahh sun... =)

Matt enjoying the festival a little too much

One thing I really enjoyed about Groovin the Moo was that they used the temptation of cheaper alcohol to discourage littering in the 18+ area. According to Johanne, who was also at Groovin the Moo, they started doing it in Europe. Basically, for every container (empty can) you return, you get $1 off the price of the drink, but you can only bring a maximum of 4 containers up per person, so instead of paying $8 for beers, we were paying $4 - which is a bargain, for festival prices! I did notice that the 18+ area was a lot tidier than the rest of the grounds, so good on whoever came up with that idea! I thought it was very effective!

We were all about the cheap beers!

Unfortunately, what brought the festival down were a few of the people on security on the day. Firstly, getting into the venue took some people 3 hours of waiting time, which is just unbelievable! There wasn't a line for those who didn't have bags, so it really slowed things down. Secondly, when I presented my bag, I was holding an empty drink bottle which I planned to fill up with water instead of buying another bottle, and I was told I could not bring that in because although it was empty, 'it could be lined with pure alcohol' (righto!). I was told to throw it out or I could not enter. I don't remember reading anything anywhere about empty drink bottles being prohibited, but I accepted it. So when I got inside the festival, the first thing I did was buy a drink in a bottle that I could refill all day, but when I got to the entrance of the 18+ section, I had to present my ID, despite the fact that I had an 18+ wristband on, have my bag searched - again - and was told to throw away my newly bought (inside the festival grounds, 5 minutes ago) drink bottle. What? On top of that, our friends who had gotten through the gates with unopened bottles of soft drink were told to throw them out or they would not be able to enter the 18+ area either. Even stranger, was that the exit of the 18+ area, with big signs saying 'No alcohol past this point' was not being guarded as heavily with people walking out with huge bags being unchecked, and strangely, Johanne was given unopened beers that he could have quite easily taken them out of the 18+ area, more than I could get my Vitamin Water in. Which reminds me, when I purchased my drink, the girl in front of me asked for a can of Red Bull and she said 'please don't open it', the server said, 'No, I have to - responsible service.' Of what? Sugar?! I thought, as the same lady served me an unopened bottle of Vitamin Water. Gosh, it was very confusing. Thankfully, all of those rules were relaxed, but honestly, what was going on there?

Where's Wally?

Vampire Weekend and their amazing chandeliers 'Me and my cousins and you and your cousins...'

Very worth it!

Something old to something new.

As promised, here is the dress that I bought from Savers last week and altered. I'm so proud of myself for seeing potential in this, and that I didn't make any mistakes when altering it.

All I really did was alter the hemline, but I think it works. I even wore the new dress to the Groovin the Moo festival I went to yesterday, which I will post about later.

Crafty Ventures

After Uni yesterday, I plodded along to Lincraft at Australia on Collins for some white thread and an unpicker for a project I plan on doing tomorrow. Of course, I ended up having a bit of a browse through the fabrics (quilting fabrics are my weakness) and the wool section. A group of seniors were also having a bit of a browse together, and they were incredibly cute. 'Ooh'-ing and 'Aah'-ing at pretty much everything and 'I guess we'll all be knitting tonight!' was said several times, which was very entertaining. Inspired by that, I also bought two balls of very thick wool and some bamboo needles - 'I only ever use bamboo needles now.' 'Yes, me too.' 'Oh, your bamboo needles are just beautiful Maggie' - so cute!

So when I came home, instead of studying, I started to knit a scarf with my brand new wool and needles and finished both balls of wool in one night!! Only problem is, the wool is so thick that the scarf is only 1/2 a meter long - haha. So now I've got to buy, what, 5 more balls of wool to finish the scarf. At least it will be nice and thick and warm for winter, because I am really ill-equipped for Melbourne Autumns, let alone the winters.

Pictures soon, when I am finished.

Long Weekend

We just ended a long weekend here in Australia, as Sunday was ANZAC day (Lest We Forget) so Monday was the ANZAC Day public holiday.

My weekend consisted of, well, A LOT! On Friday I made it my mission to clean the entire house. It took me two hours to clean every inch of our small bathroom/laundry and another hour to clean the lounge room, and my fantastic boyfriend Matt came home from work and was so pleased with how clean the house was that he did most of the dishes (which had REALLY piled up!) - thanks Matt, you are amazing! And that day ended with the best bolognese sauce ever (see earlier in my blog roll) from the freezer - very nice!

On Saturday, I got out my sewing machine for the first time in our new place and got back into sewing a present that I started for a friend of mine before Christmas and via www.masterchef.com.au, caught up on all of the episodes of the new series (because we don't have Channel 10 - Aargh!!). To be honest, I think the guys who make Australian MasterChef have gotten fairly cocky this year, with the success of the series last year. But whatevs, I still love it!

Saturday night was the lovely Sharee, Emma and Joel's housewarming, which was a fantastic night, despite the cold. Joel has finally cut most of his hair off and looks great (with heaps of references to Ned Kelly, Bon Iver, everyone in Mumford and Sons, and I can't remember who else) and I think his new look really suits him. And their house is so kitsch - it really suits them!

The group at the party were our friends from back home in Albury, so it was a great mix of people, but my favourite part of the night was getting to know the wonderful Tom's girlfriend, Simone. It was one of those moments - we just clicked! Unfortunately for Tom, us 'clicking' meant that we talked and talked for hours and Tom couldn't get Simone away from me - sorry Tom! =s

Sunday marked 3 years with Matt, which we started off with a big brekkie of gorgeous scrambled eggs, with grilled tomato, asparagus and gourmet beef sausages on toast! Yummo! I had to work in the afternoon, and when I came home, Matt gave me a lovely bunch of flowers that I am not knowledgeable to know the name of. We had plans to go out for drinks for the gorgeous Ellie's birthday in St Kilda, so with that in mind we chose a restaurant down there to have a romantic dinner together and it just happened to be owned by Ian 'Huey' Hewitson, and there he was sitting at the bar downing a bottle of red. The place is called Barney Allen's and you need to try the basted chicken and mash and the Toblerone and Grand Marnier Fondue!
Flowers from Matt

In case the weekend wasn't long enough, I even had a lovely Monday. Matt and I ventured over to Footscray and visited Savers, where I found a great dress that I intend to shorten (post about that soon) and KMart where I managed to find biker boots, a great stripy mini dress that doubles as a top and a DVD of Peter Pan, for a total sum of  $52! And I didn't even have to shell out any dosh because my sister gave me a voucher.

Then, Monday night, I had the pleasure of catching up with the one, the only, the fantastic, the lovely best friend of mine, Laura, who was down in Melbourne, all the way from Queensland. We ate at Ha Long Bay in Richmond and it was cheap and delicious and as usual we all chatted for hours. What a great night!

I wish all my weekends were that adventurous and fun!

20 April 2010

I must, I must, I must improve my bust!

**Title is dedicated to my dorky Mum, who once chanted this after telling us that she'd started going to the gym**

I was horrified today to find out that I have put on 3kg since moving to Melbourne! It may not seem like much, but I have definitely been feeling the extra weight lately, and a couple of years ago I slogged myself like crazy and lost 10kg in a year. Something I don't plan on having to do again for a while - imagine 5 or 6 x 2 to 2 1/2 hour work-outs per week - KILLER!

Luckily for me, I found myself a very lovely place to go for a long and hard walk (takes about an hour) as well as "light to moderate callisthenics" lol. I have started an account on Calorie King so I can track how many calories, and how much protein, fibre, calcium, etc, I am eating and how much exercise I am doing. It's a very helpful site, and I've already figured out that I have VERY low fibre when I thought I was doing ok in that area.

Hopefully I can keep motivated enough to keep up the good work because if I am not in shape, everything else suffers.

And just to prove how great my walking track is, here are some photos I took on my walk the other day after I was inspired by the jogging/photography efforts of Zooey Deschanel in Yes Man:

Spunky old car
Pretty wall climbers
Part of the walk
My view of Melbourne while on my walk - it looks like farmland, very confusing.

Any ideas to keep me motivated are much appreciated.

Tell Me That You Love Me More

I really didn't want to go to work today and Matt was very aware of that fact. So didn't I get such a wonderful surprise when Matt turned up at my work with a present for me? Just because, he said. Isn't he the greatest?!!

He bought me Sally Seltmann's debut album, 'Heart That's Pounding'. She is a gorgeous Australian artist that used to be known as New Buffalo. If that rings any bells, she also wrote most of the song '1,2,3,4' sung by Feist.

Here is a song from the album that I hope you enjoy:

Another Year Older...

Monday was my 23rd birthday.

I had to work that morning (7am start) but ended up bumping into my friends Nikki and Eoghan right after I finished, which was a great surprise! Eoghan shouted me breakfast at Auction Rooms - some delicious avocado, tomato, poached egg and fresh cashew-basil pesto loveliness, and I spent a good hour crapping on about, well, crap, with both of them and Matt who also joined us.

Matt bought me this cute necklace by Shonah at the Rose St Market the day before, which I was really stoked about because it's so different and pretty and very fitting, because Matt is very tall so I sometimes call him a giraffe (nearly 2 metres!)

He also bought me this fabric clutch that our friend Conner makes through her label El Tiger. They're the perfect size for putting my sunnies in and the fabric is just so cheerful and pretty, that when it's dreary enough to have to put my sunnies away, at least there is something bright and lovely to look at.

Then, when I got home, my wonderful house-mate, Lisa gave me this Limedrop ring of a babushka doll - she so fat and cute! I'm so glad that she's mine now.

That night, we went out for drinks at Public Bar, which - luckily for us - have $4.50 jugs on Monday nights - Awesome!

Then on Tuesday, with my Coles/Myer voucher from my sister, I went to the Benefit Brow Bar in Myer in the city, and treated myself to a much needed eyebrow wax. It was more expensive than I would have usually paid, and they thought they were better than anyone else at waxing eyebrows - no, really - but I did get a complimentary make-up sesh afterwards and let's face it, it was a great way to spend part of my voucher.

So all in all, it was a great birthday. Chuffed! =)

Join me for High Tea?

My house-mate Lisa and I have decided to have a Mad Men Tupperware party very soon, so I've been looking up things to make for it. It will kind of be like a High Tea, with everyone wearing vintage dresses and sipping potent cocktails, while being convinced to buy expensive Tupperware.

Feeling Thrifty

After viewing a post by Lady Melbourne early this morning about a recent op shopping trip, I decided that instead of being the lazy moo I usually am when I don't have to start work until 12pm, that I would go and have my own op shopping adventure.

So at 9.30am this morning, I ventured over to Sydney Rd, Brunswick and met my fantastic and most thrifty friend, Nikki at Savers.

I managed to find 5 dresses and 2 pairs of shoes to try on, but decided it would be best just to settle for the dorky brown sandles, which were, I must admit - love at first sight.

We then had a look around at a couple of other shops, to no avail, until we went to The Green Collective, which had both recycled clothing and lots of 'green' products to purchase. There I found a stripy white and blue top (a blue that I don't think I have ever owned, clothing wise) and something I have coveted for quite a while now - my very own Keep Cup!! So now I don't need to take a heavy mug to uni, or get a paper or plastic cup while I am out - chuffed!

All in all I thought my morning was rather productive and I wound up with a satisfactory haul - only $28 spent too! Let's not tell Matt though. I wasn't really supposed to go shopping (o'.'o).

07 April 2010

I think my posts are beginning to become more of a weekly thing of late. But I have been a bit busy lately, with work and uni and life and all that.

I got to visit my Mum this weekend, which was great. It was nice to be back in the country and feel like there is actually some physical space between people for a while (I live in a pretty small apartment with my boyfriend and our housemate, so it can get a little cramped sometimes). I also had my first uni exam yesterday, and I think I passed. I hope lol. I studied my little butt off so I had better pass!

On Monday, I made my best bolognese yet, for which I think I might give you the recipe. It was a combination of my usual recipe, a recipe from Delicious magazine and a recipe I saw on Rachael Ray's show (Mum has pay TV - yay!). I am always looking to improve my bolognese, even though it is already pretty freakin delicious. But anyway, give this baby a crack!

BOLOGNESE
30g unsalted butter
2 Tbl olive oil
200g Pancetta, chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 onion, finely chopped
2 stalks cellery, finely chopped
1 carrot, finely grated
500g Premium beef mince
3/4 cup dry red wine
1 jar bolognese sauce
1 can chopped tomatoes
2 cups beef stock
2 bay leaves
1 Tbl chopped basil leaves
Salt and pepper, to taste

In a heavy based saucepan, melt the butter and oil, over medium heat.
Add the pancetta and saute for 3 to 5 minutes, or until it starts to crisp.
Add the garlic, onion, celery and carrot and saute for 5 minutes, or until soft.
Add the beef mince and cook, stirring, until browned.
Pour in the red wine and stir through. Simmer until most of it has evaporated.
Pour in the jar of sauce, the canned tomatoes and the beef stock and stir.
Add the 2 bay leaves and basil, and taste the sauce before you add the salt and pepper. (The pancetta makes this sauce very salty already)
Bring to the boil, stirring occasionally, and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally for 30-40 minutes or until the sauce has thickened.
Before serving, remove the bay leaves.
Serve with whatever pasta you like, I used Spinach Fettucini, and cheese.
OM NOM NOM NOM NOM...

Oh, and in case you were wondering, I did get my hair dyed, but you can barely see it, so I'm not going to post a picture for you, lol. Sorry.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Hey there! It's been a while since my last post, but I assure you that I have very good reasoning; uni assignments, tests, an exam coming up, too many social commitments and work. Boring but true.

Meanwhile, I have decided that, for the first time ever, I am going to dye my hair. You read correctly - I am a hair dye virgin. And baby, it's time to pop that cherry of mine!!

Since I've been gone I've discovered how cool Alexa Chung is (watching It's On With Alexa Chung is a good way to procrastinate - trust me!!), and so I've been YouTube-ing her and Google Image-ing her and discovered this awesome idea for a dye job:

Dang, she's so pretty! And see how the ends are lighter than the roots of her hair? Yes? Well, apparently, she does that on purpose. According to www.elleuk.com, she "ask(s) for a balliage technique, it focuses colour through the ends of the hair rather than at the roots, giving a natural sun-kissed look", which is what I'm gonna do! What do you think? I personally love it and think it a different way to dye my hair without being too brave (lack of bravery is the reason that I haven't dyed my hair in the first place). My colour wont be as light, because my natural colour is a lot darker, but you get the drift.

~

And here are some pictures from that wedding I went to a week and a half ago;

Me and Matt in front of the chapel

Did you manage to see the dapper man that is my boyfriend? Gosh, is he spunky.

Matt and I with Matt's sisters Tracy and Leonie, and Leonie's boyfriend Rav. Also, a full shot with my shoesies. =D

Have a lovely day.

She's a Shoe In

I finally got paid on Friday so of course I went shopping!!! It's my personal rule that whenever I get a new job, I have every right to treat myself to a little something, and this time I found the most glorious pair of shoes!

I'm new to the city and I knew there was a Big W somewhere, I just kept forgetting where. And because I always manage to find something at 'Big Dub', I made it my mission to find where it was, and as soon as I got there I ventured straight over to the shoe section and was immediately drawn to this pair of loveliness:

For less than 30 bucks, I bought myself and brand new pair of hapiness. I really LOVE Big Dub.

I wore them that night to my wonderful friends' Rachie and Nick's place for a delicious Spanish feast, with Matt, including meatball tapas, mixed paella and copius amounts of Sangria and beers, and so they were a constant talking point for the evening lol.

We ended up staying the night at their place and it took a long time for us to get home because we forgot that we didn't have bus money and had a lot of issues with transport zoning and ahh, it just took us forever to get home. I had to put my hair up because I resemble a rooster when I wake up in the morning, but at least I had my brand new shoes to make me feel like some sort of effort was put into my appearance.
Dress: Don't Ask Amanda, Handbag: Bluebird, Sunnies: Sportsgirl, Shoes: Big W, Hedging: courtesy of a random house on a random street.

I'm even going to wear them today to a wedding I get to go to. *sigh* What is it about a brand new pair of shoes? I love this feeling.
